Higher-level Maths Achievement
Overview
Higher-Level Maths Achievement aims to help secondary schools support high-attaining students from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve top grades (7-9) in GCSE Maths and continue studying maths after GCSE.
The programme is for schools with higher-than-average numbers of disadvantages students. Around 400 schools across England will take part, with about 10 schools in each Maths Hub area.
Schools on the programme will receive:
- Support from their local Maths Hub and AMSP Lead
- Professional development for teachers
- Maths activities and events for students
The goal is to increase the number of disadvantaged students who:
- Achieve grades 7-9 in GCSE Maths
- Go on to study maths at Level 3

Support for schools
For participating schools, the AMSP Local Lead will work with teachers in the maths department (and SLT if required) to devise approaches to improve the achievement at GCSE of high-attaining students from KS2 (with a particular focus on students from disadvantaged backgrounds). The aim is to support schools and maths departments to make sustained positive change.
Professional development for teachers
Teachers taking part in the programme will be introduced to teaching materials and resources that support a teaching for mastery approach. They will also be able to share ideas and discuss classroom strategies with other teachers through Work Groups.
These Work Groups will be led by the AMSP Local Lead and/or LLME from the Maths Hub. Sessions will focus on effective ways to teach higher-level GCSE topics in Years 10 and 11.
Alongside the face-to-face sessions, teachers will also be encouraged to attend other relevant professional development opportunities offered by the AMSP.
Support for students
Students will take part in events that build confidence with challenging GCSE Maths topics and support them in achieving grades 7-9. Activities may include university masterclasses or school-based sessions led by local teachers. Teachers will also have access to high-quality resources and support to offer the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics to develop students' problem-solving skills.
Higher-Level Maths Achievement (Embedding the Impact Community)
Participating teachers will work together as part of an online community in partnership with Mobius Maths Hub. They will continue exploring classroom materials and support colleagues in embedding these approaches into teaching where appropriate. Teachers will also remain involved in the wider Higher-level Maths Achievement Programme and attend study days alongside their students.
*This community is only open to schools who have participated in the 2025/26 Higher-Level Maths Achievement Programme*
