Mastering Number Programme

The Mastering Number Programme is a fully funded national initiative, designed to build strong foundations in number sense for all children. It progresses through 3 phases:

  • Mastering Number at Reception and KS1
  • Mastering Number Embedding the Impact and Year 3
  • Mastering Number at KS2.

Mastering Number is wholly consistent with and complementary to the Primary Teaching for Mastery Programme, which has been running since 2016. So progression to Embedding the Impact or Mastering Number at KS2 is aligned with engagement in a Teaching for Mastery Work Group.

The programme focuses on developing a deep understanding of number, enabling children to become fluent in calculation and confident, flexible thinkers. Over time, this ensures that children leave Key Stage 1 with the skills, understanding, and confidence they need to succeed in mathematics as they move through school continue to build on these in KS2.

Particular attention is given to the key knowledge and understanding required in Reception, with clear and carefully planned progression throughout Key Stage 1. By securing these early foundations, the programme supports long-term success in maths and fosters positive attitudes towards learning with numbers.
