Primary Mastery Specialists explains what it is like working with Mobius Maths Hub

What is your current role and school, and what career stage are you at?

Currently I am working at a school in Corsham, Wiltshire. I am a Year 5/6 teacher and a Curriculum Development Lead too. I also share the responsibilities of being the Lead Mathematician for the teaching and learning at school too.

What made you decide to become a Mastery Specialist?

I decided to become a Mastery Specialist as I have a love of all things Maths. I love teaching Maths and seeing the lightbulb moments children have when building on and understanding new concepts. I wanted to be able to build on my Mathematical understanding to enhance the teaching and learning opportunities we have on offer at our school.

What have you enjoyed about the training so far?

I have enjoyed getting to know the fabulous group of people I trained alongside last year who I now have the opportunity to work with this year. It has been invaluable to have this experience alongside other people and learn from them too. I have enjoyed finding out more about the Maths behind the Maths and now have a greater understanding of the 5 big ideas.

How have you adapted your own practice so far, and what has been the impact?

I have made so many adaptions to my own practice across each of the 5 big ideas. The main change I made to my own practice was around coherence – I made the steps the children took during the learning smaller so that they were achievable for all. This enabled all learners to engage in their learning, feel positive about Maths and be successful in their learning.

What are you looking forward to doing when you become a Mastery Specialist?

I became a Maths Specialist at the end of the last academic year and have been running my first developing workgroup this year. I have really enjoyed getting to know teachers from other schools and being able to have discussions around Maths. It has been amazing hearing about all of the different things that are being trialled and the impact that is having on the children.

How has the decision to become a Mastery Specialist affected your role at school, or how do you expect it to do so in the future?

It has impacted on my ability to lead Mathematics at the school I am working at as it has given me a greater understanding of the 5 big ideas behind Maths Mastery. It has enabled me to see the Maths behind the Maths and share that knowledge with others.

What are the benefits to your school of having a Mastery Specialist?

It has provided amazing CPD which has enabled positive changes to happen within the school. It has also formed close links with the Maths Hub which have been invaluable.

What would you say to someone considering becoming a Mastery Specialist?

Do it! It is such an amazing experience and you will learn so much!
