Understanding the Characteristics of SEND When Teaching Mathematics to both Primary & Secondary Pupils.

Supporting students with SEND in maths to flourish
The Work Group is for:
KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4 practitioners
Teachers and TAs (ideally TAs should attend with a teacher from the same school)
SEND and Mainstream settings
The sessions will cover topics aimed at increasing pupil participation and enjoyment in mathematics, as well as improving pupil progress through a growth mindset. Teachers will be given the tools to allow pupils to go above and beyond their expectations and that of the professionals.
- Using and extending the use of the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) in the classroom
- Exploring the use of specific manipulatives and how they are best suited to particular mathematical content
- The language of mathematics and strategies to promote mathematical talk
- Specific Learning Difficulties including Dyscalculia, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia
- Identifying and supporting students with Maths Anxiety
- Strategies to develop positive mindsets in students
- Cognitive Load Theory (CLT): how it impacts students and ways to reduce CLT in the classroom
- Exploring The Forgetting Curve and the power of retrieval practice
- Use of diagnostics to identify specific needs of pupils
- Ideas to support students with word problems and problem-solving activities
- The use of games in the maths lesson
- Developing links with the wider community
- There is an expectation that participants will complete gap tasks between each session
